In commemoration of the International Migration Day, the 18^th December, the Migrant Working Group - a network of 20 international and national non-governmental organizations will present the “2014 Brief Summary” highlighting the plights of migrant workers and their children in Thailand. Hosting more than two million migrants and their dependents, Thailand has been struggling to find the most effective way to manage the inflow of these workers that continues to grow.  Thai policies on migrant labor are inconsistent. Policy implementation focuses mainly on the arrest and deportation of undocumented migrants; and too often fails to address the protection of the migrant workers’ rights, leaving many migrant workers living in limbo. 

The event will highlight education and protection issues related to children of migrant workers, the abuse and exploitation of migrant workers including human trafficking situation, the failure to access the basic healthcare, and right to justice under the current government’s administration.

The event will start with the VDO presentation of highlighted situations from 2014, and will follow with a panel discussion.

The panel will include: 

• Mr. Adisorn Kerdmongkol: The current policies and measures and its impact to migrant workers and their dependents
• Mr. Tim Murray: The situation of migrant children’s education and their vulnerabilities
• Mr. Sompong Srakaew/Mr. Siwawong Suktawee: Migrant worker’s trafficking situation and the Rohinya boat people  
• Ms. Nonglak Distawong: Health insurance for migrant workers and their children
• Ms. Aye Ma Cho: Migrant workers’ right to justice
